Alexander Girard (1907 - 1993), nasce a New York da madre americana di Boston e padre franco-italiano. Cresce in Italia, a Firenze e si forma al Royal Institute of British Architects di Londra e presso la Regia Scuola di Architettura di Roma. Torna poi negli Stati Uniti per vivere e lavorare e apre i suoi studi a New York, in Michigan e in New Mexico.
Girard è ampiamente conosciuto per i suoi contributi nel campo del design tessile americano, in particolare attraverso il suo lavoro per Herman Miller (dal 1952 al 1975), dove ha collaborato con altri due grandi pionieri, quali George Nelson e Charles e Ray Eames.

Alexander Girard (1907 - 1993) was born in New York to an American mother from Boston and a French-Italian father. He grew up in Italy, in Florence, and trained at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London and at the Royal School of Architecture in Rome. Then he came back in the United States to live and work and he opens his studies in New York, Michigan and New Mexico.
Girard is widely known for his contributions in the field of American textile design, particularly through his work for Herman Miller (1952 to 1975), where he collaborated with two other great pioneers such as George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames.
His work includes a wide variety of projects, including the restaurant La Fonda del Sol in New York (1960), the Herman Miller Showplace: T & O (1961), Braniff Airlines (1965) and the Foundation Girard (1962), which hosts the its extensive collection of folk art, toys, textiles and objects from around the world.
The Girard projects became connotative elements and mark the landscape of modern life.
