European Design Festival 2024

In Naples from 30 May to 2 June 2024

We are so pleased to present this first Italian edition of the European Design Awards. Volcanic, Sunny, Tumultuous, these are the key words that tell the real nature of the Italian graphic design to all our international friends who will join us here.

The most important European award dedicated to communication design, since its foundation in 2007, had never been organized in our country. Moreover it is greatly important for us that this first Italian edition can takes place in Naples, a metropolis that stand as a symbol for the profound transformation that major European cities are undergoing and with respect to which the role that design can play needs comparison and inspiration. No city in our country represents a more fertile ground for addressing the new fields of work that designers have and will face; having the opportunity to bring together the Italian design community with some of the most important figures in international design, therefore, represents a unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of our work and on how it will have to include challenges such as sustainability, inclusion, the coexistence of transitioning ethnic communities, the economy of culture, the redefinition of city and territorial identities, and much more.

We believe we have composed a program of great interest, designed to allow us to discover key places in this wonderful city, and in preparation for the grand award ceremony, lectures, workshops, city tours, and many informal networking opportunities will be organized. In the exploration of an unpredictable city like Naples, these opportunities for informal exchange will naturally arise.

Stay tuned for more updates!

WE ARE A MULTITUDE!
AWDA is the biennial international award dedicated to female visual communication designers. After 12 years from its foundation, continues to transform itself by listening to the voice of activists and actors engaged in the fight against gender and all sorts of other inequalities. AWDA has become over time a research project and a observatory, a large analog and digital archive that tells the many stories of women designers around the world. For the ED-festival we have identified, starting from the designers selected in the last editions, a path between the projects that – from Italy and the Mediterranean coast – have been able to narrate the identity and promotion of territories, whether they are small communities, large urban spaces, as well as the tangible and intangible heritage of these places.

From creating data sculptures to making data tangible and realizing interactive infographics, each project demonstrates how design can resolve contemporary issues.

DISCOURSES AND NARRATIVES ON THE HISTORY OF ITALIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN.
Can design archives contribute to writing new histories based on multiple epicentres instead of privileging hegemonic narratives?
The intention of presenting some projects promoted by the Graphic Design Documentation Center of AIAP is to propose and discuss criteria, models, and methodologies to answer the initial question. One of the Association’s goals is to spread the design culture. The Centre’s mission has evolved from a pure thematic or monographic narrative dimension to a richer series of discourses that could generate new readings, scalable and adaptable to contexts and needs. Another approach is the micro-historical one, aiming to play a part in reshaping the history of Italian graphic design by highlighting the design work of ‘minor’ figures. These initiatives wish to broaden the body of literature and narratives mainly centred on the Milan context or discover ‘lost’, unknown and relevant case studies.

SENZATOMICA. DESIGN TO ENCOURAGE ACTION
The project for the new identity of the Senzatomica exhibition will be presented, a traveling event, already held in Brescia and Rome and which will visit the main Italian cities in the coming years. The objective of the promoting body, the Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai, is to involve people, making them feel part of a peace movement, making them protagonists. The graphic project starts from research on the protest messages that have inhabited our imagination over the last century. Posters and documents from the large peaceful protest movements, against war, for Civil Rights, up to the demonstrations after the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were analysed.

— An exhibition set up in the hypogean spaces of the complex displaying graphic design projects commissioned from national and international designers. We will ask them to interpret symbols, iconography, meanings, rituals of whatever revolves around the meaning of death from different cultural roots. The aim is to bring together the objects and sediments that popular tradition has accumulated along with the contemporary signs that visual and design culture produces today on a theme that has changed in meaning over time and has lost that sense of coexistence with the world of the living that instead shines through the ancient rooms of this complex.
